Melbourne start-up Gavl is capitalising on its love affair with auctions by developing an app for IOS and Android that enables consumers to watch auctions either live or on demand from anywhere in the world.

Gavl is an online auction platform that gives real estate agents the opportunity to broadcast auctions in absolute real time to potential buyers who can 'virtually'  attend the auctions across several states over one weekend.

In its first month of going live, the company says  100 real estate agencies have used its platform across Australia and New Zealand, in both metro and regional areas. One property in Mount Martha was viewed more than 22,000 times according to a company press statement.

Former Hawthorn AFL player and Gavl CEO Joel Smith says the app is an effective piece of technology in bringing auctions to the people.

“All it takes is a tripod and a smartphone to film the auction and then potential buyers can
view live via the app,” Smith said.

Consumers are able to search for auctions on the site in nearly 10 ways – including by price,
auction status or suburb - and look at the bidding history of those that have already gone
under the hammer.

In addition to the app, Gavl is also working on a live bidding platform.

“We are close to finalising features for the app that will give agents the ability to allow their buyers to communicate bids from the app while watching the live stream,” Smith said.

The app has attracted attention and led to a significant investment from Flight Centre co-founder, Boost Juice seed investor and former Hawthorn Football Club Vice-President  Geoff Harris.
