The seventh instalment of the Property Portal Workshop is on again in San Francisco on the 31st July 2012.

Over the last 3+ years we have held 6 Property Portal Watch Workshops. These events have become the “must attend” sessions for the leaders of property portals around the world.

Historically we have had hundreds of attendees from Immobilienscout24, Immonet, Idealista, Fotocasa, Seloger, REA Group, Nestoria, Trovit, Trulia, Zillow, Move.com and many many more.

It’s now time to get together again to chat about the industry, share experiences and have a few drinks.

We will be charging to attend the workshop – a first for us.  The cost for the day will be US$150. This will cover our costs as well as allowing us to provide tea / coffee / lunch.

Theme: What’s Next for Property Portals.

We are keen to explore where property portals are going and how they are changing. We will look at the mature markets and how the market leaders and challengers are transforming and then discuss how these experiences can be applied to emerging markets.

The workshop is a series of case studies presented by the some of the attendees. We like to have real people talking about real issues. Of course, it depends on who attends, but we always get a great cross section.

We are currently working on the agenda and are looking for presentations and great topics. If you have any thoughts about what to discuss or would like to present, please let me know.

Here are some of the presentations you can look forward to:

Rolling Out a Multi City Approach in Brazil
(Brian Requarth, CEO & Founder, VivaReal – Brazil)
With 200m people the fast growing Brazilian market provides significant upside potential for any successful property portal – either regionally or nationally. The challenge in conquering this market is the sheer size of the country (the 5th largest and greater than the continental US) and the number of large cities with 17 having 1 million or more people. VivaReal is rapidly emerging as one of the few players with a chance of dominating the property portal scene. This session looks at how VivaReal is rolling out its business model across the Brazilian market.

Global Bench Marking – How Do Portals Compare Around the World?
(Simon Baker, Chairman, Classified Ad Ventures & CAV Investment Holdings)
Most portals around the world operate in a vacuum. They are building their business without any real understanding about how they are going compared to their global peers. This session looks at the KPI’s a site should be tracking and how 15 sites are tracking against these measures.

Building a Scalable Display Advertising Business
(Raj Chauhan, President Nth America, AdSlot – USA)
Property portals have valuable assets: a large volume of page views, an in-market audience and strong relationships with advertisers. This is fertile ground to establish a high growth display ad revenue stream, if done right. This session will illustrate how leading portals have cross-sold display to their agents, increasing their revenues while keeping costs in check. Topics covered will include how to optimize price across the many thousands of suburbs in a scalable manner, the benefits of competitive tension in a rolling market and how to maintain 100% control over advertiser access to inventory in a private market.

Building Great PR Around Property Reports and Other Market Data
(Alistair Helm, CEO, realestate.co.nz – New Zealand)
In April 2009 realestate.co.nz launched a monthly Property Report based on an extensive 5-year database covering over 95% of all listings from licensed real estate agents in New Zealand. The report regularly receives extensive media coverage as it is the most timely and “first” property report of the month – published by 8.30am on the first day of the month following. This session looks at how the Property Report has provided the company with a credible platform for the CEO to comment on the property market and thereby leverage PR to build brand.

What’s New in Online Floor Plans
(Jeroen Bekkers, CEO, Floorplanner & Sven Brookhuis, Owner, Officeplanner – Netherlands)
Floorplanner.com is a leading innovator in online floor plans and have successfully partnered with portals such as market leader funda.nl in the Netherlands. Recently they have partnered with another Dutch online floor plan company, officeplanner.com. Together they will demonstrate how mobile phones, tablets & user assistive technology are making it easier to create and to interact with floorplans in new and engaging ways for both residential as commercial properties.

What’s Next in Mapping for Portals?
(Ed Freyfogle, Co-Founder, Nestoria – United Kingdom)
The last years have seen unprecedented innovation in the online mapping space, both in the traditional desktop space as well as the mobile use case. Google has begun charging heavy users, Microsoft has allied themselves with Nokia (owners of Navteq), national agencies like the UK’s Ordnance Survey try to adapt to global online competitors, and even Apple has recently entered the space. Meanwhile open source geo service OpenStreetMap has slowly but steadily entered the mainstream. Ed Freyfogle, one of the founders of vertical search engine Nestoria will provide an overview of recent developments, with particular attention to the question of whether open source data services have reached sufficient maturity for the online property world.
