Thoughts on realestate.com.au Price Increase

by Simon Baker on 26 July, 2010

in Features, Opinion

realestate.com.au, the market leader in Australia, has announced a price increase that will come into play as of the 1st August. This announcement came in the form of a message that appeared just over a month ago in the administration section of the realestate.com.au site. While the message didn’t reveal the level of the increase that agents could expect, discussions with insiders suggest that the price rise could be as much as 30% for some customers.

Price increases are nothing new, especially from market leaders such as realestate.com.au. However, while agents will not like the price rise, it will be interesting to see the impact the increase has on the number of subscribers that realestate.com.au has in the Australian market and more importantly, their desire to spend on premium products and services.

Read on for more.

Google Maps Missing the Mark

Post image for Google Maps Missing the Mark

Google is a company you might think would succeed in an area like real estate: The problem involves aggregating, cleansing and being able to search across hundreds of thousands of sources. And that’s why whenever the firm announces something related to real estate, competitors freeze with fear and the media loves to cover it.

Consumers, however, simply have not cared for many years.

It has been a year since Google entered the Australian real estate market with the launch of listings on Google Maps. In that time there has been much conjecture on whether real esate on Google Maps would be successful. Most of this conjecture has been hopeful or experiential rather than fact based. One analyst recently even went as far as downgrading their recommendation on the REA Group to a sell based on the potential impact of Google.

While facts are hard to come by and the Google team are relatively secretive as to the performance of real estate on Google Maps, we now have some facts to look at the impact of Google Maps on a mid-sized property portal in Australia.

I recently spent some time with one of the customers of the recently launched Nestoria Australia who also have all their listings on Google Maps.

While the results are high level, they do reveal some interesting facts about the performance of real estate on Google Maps.
