How long is the drive from Sausalito to San Francisco? You may ask, as you’re thinking of buying a beautiful new home facing the Sausalito marina, but your work is in the heart of the City by the Bay. Well, Trulia has new maps which may be able to help you estimate your commute according to traffic congestion.

Trulia has developed a series of Commuter Maps which, rather than illustrating the time of one linear commute from point A to point B, they show area ‘traffic heat’, indicating the time it should take to get pretty much anywhere from the initial point of departure, in real time.

Users can get a bird’s eye point of view of the congestion of an entire area/city and plan accordingly. This can be particularly useful for people who have just moved into a new area, and are still getting acclimated to it. It’s also for tourists who may be planning a tour of the city, but are not familiar with the local traffic, so they need a guide which will assist them in the timing of the drive-around.

Trulia’s maps are using OpenStreetMaps and General Transit Feed Specifications (GTFS) feeds, which are available to anyone, with the only difference being that, Trulia is displaying the data in a more visually appealing context.

Currently, Trulia’s very attractive and equally useful maps, can be used for drive times throughout the US, and  public transit calculations are available in a few cities.
