Online accommodations marketplace Airbnb announced that it has reached a total of 10 million guest nights booked on its site since its launch in 2008.

The San Francisco-based company booked its 2 millionth guest night this time last year, and reached the 5 million mark five months ago.

The company reported that it now lists more than 200,000 bookable properties worldwide, a new night of travel is booked on Airbnb every two seconds, and demand for Airbnb accommodations in the US has increased 240% in the last year.

Airbnb has opened offices in Barcelona, Copenhagen, London, Milan, Moscow and Paris; Airbnb’s growth can be attributed mainly to its expansion in Europe. The company has also opened an office in São Paulo. Airbnb’s CEO, Brian Chesky stated that the next wave of growth is expected to come from Latin America.

When the website was launched, the company did not assume it would work in all markets. “For all we knew it was a San Francisco thing, or a US thing,” said Chesky. “Every time we enter a new market we realise it’s not a western culture thing. This is a very old idea in Europe.”
